Marks of Greatness

I recently heard a message that really resounded with me. It talked about Marks of Greatness.

There are only 3:

High Respect for Persons

To respect someone regardless of prominence or wealth or status. This is a counter-cultural way of thinking since we are trained to respect and defer to those with higher power and socioeconomic status than us. However, everyone deserves respect from the President to the janitor working nights to the homeless person sleeping on the streets. They are humans too and we need to perceive them that way. You never know when the situations will reverse.

To take Humanity Seriously

Mother Teresa once said “The greatest diseas today is not leprosy nor is it tuberculosis but the feeling of being unwanted, uncared for and deserted by everyone.” We need to take a look around us and realize that we are not the only ones on this planet. Especially in modern society, we are becoming more and more isolated from each other. We forget the needs of humans and the humanity that we all crave within us. We need to connect to others and only then can we find what we are ourselves.

Learning to Deal “Drastically” with Ourselves

We have to take an objective look at ourselves to see what we need to change and improve for ourselves. We choose our own thoughts and actions and sometimes those thoughts and actions are not only detrimental for others but very detrimental to ourselves. Like someone needs to amputate a gangreneous limb to prevent death, we need to identify what parts of our personality and mindset are rotting and, even though it’s painful, cut it off from ourselves. Only we can change ourselves.

If we can do all three, maybe, just maybe, we are on our way to greatness.

What do you think is a Mark of Greatness?
